The title "One-Third of a Nation" refers to Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1937 second inaugural remark that a third of the nation was "ill-housed," and this silkscreen poster advertises the Federal theater Project's living newspaper on that subject. Living newspapers were the project's signature form: fast-moving, documentary-style stage productions that dramatized current events, with Arthur Arent as the writer. The poster's rows of identical row houses make the subject visible at a glance. It is a useful example of how the WPA turned civic debate about housing into public theater and graphic art.
