Few posters from the Federal theater Project name a state as specifically as this one, which advertises a 1936 production in Iowa. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, was created to put theater workers back on the payroll during the Depression, and it staged plays in communities well beyond New York. This silkscreen was made in the WPA's poster workshops, which produced bold, flat-color designs for local productions. The date stamped on the back, July 1937, falls a year after the production, so it may mark when the sheet was filed rather than when it was printed.
