The poster's most distinctive detail is its Liberty Bell motif, paired with the subject tag placing the production in Iowa, which sets it apart from the other Federal theater announcements on this board. It advertises a comedy, *The Pursuit of Happiness*, written by Lawrence Langner and Armina Marshall, and the Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, staged plays like it to put theater workers back on payroll during the Depression. The silkscreen process let the project print large runs of bold, inexpensive posters, and the one-color-plus-ground style seen here was a hallmark of the WPA's graphic output. A date stamp on the reverse of this copy records July 1937.
