Machine Age was a new musical comedy by William Sully, and this silkscreen poster announces its staging under the Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration. Created in 1936, the poster reflects the Project's effort to keep theater workers employed during the Depression while bringing live productions to New York audiences at low cost. The silkscreen process, used widely by the WPA's poster units, allowed for bold flat color and large runs, and the design shows how the agency turned publicity into its own art form. A date stamp on the back, June 4, 1937, suggests the print was handled and filed well after the show's original run.
