A comedy about the police is what sets this poster apart, advertising a Federal theater Project staging of Rufus King and Milton Lazarus's play *I Want a Policeman* in San Diego in 1936. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created to put theater workers back to work during the Depression and to bring low-cost live performance to audiences across the country. Its posters were made by silkscreen, a method that allowed the WPA poster units to produce bold, flat areas of color cheaply in large runs, so this playbill also works as a piece of graphic design.
