A Yiddish-language comedy sets this 1936 poster apart from other Federal theater announcements. It advertises *The Tailor Becomes a Storekeeper*, a comedy by the Yiddish writer David Pinski (1872-1959), staged by the Federal theater Project's Yiddish Unit in Chicago. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed theater workers during the Depression, and its Yiddish companies performed for immigrant audiences in their own language. The silkscreen color process used here was a favored method of the Federal Art Project's poster shops.
