Few posters in the WPA collection advertise a play by David Pinski, a playwright born in the Russian Empire who wrote in Yiddish and German. This silkscreen promotes *The Tailor Becomes a Storekeeper* at Daly's theater in New York in 1936, a grotesque comedy staged under the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that employed actors, designers and printers during the Depression. The bold color and simple lettering reflect the screen-printing methods the project's art workshops used to publicize shows cheaply. A date stamp on the back, April 9, 1938, marks a later handling of the sheet, not the year of the production.
