Advertising a Des Moines production of *Up Pops the Devil*, a three-act comedy by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, this 1936 silkscreen poster reflects the Federal theater Project's effort to bring professional stage work to communities far from New York. The play had reached Broadway in the early 1930s, and the Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, staged it as part of a national program of affordable live theater. The catalog tags list ballerinas among the subjects, hinting at the dance elements of the show, and the WPA stamp on the back marks the poster as official government business.
