This silkscreen poster advertises a Federal theater Project production in California, staged in 1939, with a title that marks it as a stage work openly hostile to the Nazi regime. The Federal theater Project was a New Deal program that put unemployed theater workers to work, and its productions often took on current political questions that commercial houses avoided. Its posters were made by WPA artists, many working in silkscreen, a method that let designers produce bold, flat areas of color in quantity. In 1939 Congress cut off the Federal theater's funding, so this poster captures the program in its final year.
