A temperance melodrama from the 1840s, *The Drunkard, or The Fallen Saved* stayed in repertory for generations, long after its original audiences had gone. This 1938 screen print advertises the Federal theater Project's staging of the play, one of many productions the New Deal arts program mounted during the Depression to keep theater workers employed and bring live performance to ordinary audiences. The catalog subjects point to alcoholic beverages and bottles, which suggests the poster leans on the drink imagery at the heart of the play's warning against intemperance.
