Few posters of the period tie a stage production so directly to a neighborhood group. This 1939 silkscreen announces a Federal theater Project staging of *Day Is Darkness*, billed as a famous anti-Nazi play, and it was sponsored by the Boyle Heights Progressive Benevolent Club in Los Angeles. The Federal theater Project was part of the Work Projects Administration, created to put theater workers back on payroll during the Depression, and by 1939 its productions often took up the political questions of the day. Silkscreen, the method used here, was a favorite of WPA poster units because it allowed bold flat color and affordable print runs. The local sponsorship shows how a Boyle Heights community group helped bring anti-fascist drama to its own audience.
