Few posters of the period were made for a Yiddish-language stage in Los Angeles, and this one was produced for a production in Boyle Heights, the city's Jewish and immigrant neighborhood. The Boyle Heights Progressive Benevolent Club sponsored the show, and the record credits Fess George alongside the Federal theater Project, the New Deal arm of the Works Progress Administration that put theater workers back on payrolls during the Depression. Its billing as "the famous anti-Nazi play" reflects how seriously many American communities took the threat from Germany in 1939, the year the war began in Europe. The silkscreen color and bold lettering show how the WPA's poster units turned live theater into a public announcement.
