Mad Hopes, a three-act comedy, is the production this Federal theater Project poster announces. The Federal theater was part of the Works Progress Administration's relief program, launched in 1935 to put actors, directors and stagehands back to work during the Depression, and it staged plays across the country, often at low ticket prices. Brent Romney, the artist named in the record, was one of many designers who worked in the WPA's poster shops, where silkscreen let them produce bold, flat color in inexpensive runs. The stamp on the back, dated July 8, 1937, is a year later than the 1936 production date.
