Few posters on this board carry a Liberty Bell as their central image, and this one uses it to signal the play's Revolutionary-era setting in a comedy. The Federal theater Project, a New Deal program run under the Works Progress Administration, produced plays like this one across the country to employ theater workers during the Depression and to bring live drama to audiences who could rarely afford Broadway. The subject line also places a production in Iowa, a reminder that the project reached small towns as well as big cities. Its silkscreen printing was a cheap, durable method that suited a program that needed to publicize many shows quickly.
