The title itself is the joke: this 1936 Federal theater Project poster advertises a comedy called *Censored*, written by Conrad Seiler and staged at the Mayan theater in Los Angeles. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed out-of-work actors, directors and stagehands during the Depression and put their productions before low-cost audiences. The poster's subject headings point to the decade's arguments over what audiences should be allowed to see, and the flat, bold color of its silkscreen reflects the economical printing methods the WPA poster shops used to promote their shows.
