Printed for a production of *The Case of Philip Lawrence*, this poster advertises a new play based on a work by George McEntee, staged by the Negro theater Project, a unit of the Federal theater Project under the Works Progress Administration. The production was presented in New York, and the poster's subject heading points to the project's efforts to portray African American life on the stage during the 1930s. Like other WPA posters, it was made with the silkscreen process, which allowed designers to produce bold, flat color inexpensively in large runs. The date stamp on the back, June 4, 1937, shows that the board was handled long after its 1936 printing.
