A theatrical poster for a Federal theater Project production of *African Vineyard* sets this piece apart from ordinary commercial printing of its era. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to put out-of-work actors, writers, designers and stagehands back to work during the Great Depression. Its posters were often produced by the program's own art and print units, which gave many of them a bold, graphic style meant to catch the eye of people walking city streets. Look closely at the flat color and large lettering, which show how designers made a stage production readable from across the street.
