The poster advertises a Federal theater Project production of *Murray Hill Society* at La Cadena and Mt. Vernon, with a carriage among its subjects, a detail that points to the period setting of the comedy. Printed in color silkscreen in 1936, it comes from the Works Progress Administration's theater program, which put actors, directors and designers to work during the Depression and staged plays in communities across the country. Federal theater posters were often made quickly and cheaply, so their bold flat color and simple lettering were practical choices as much as artistic ones. The record also credits Howard Leslie (1893-1943) as sponsor, a reminder of how many individuals shaped these productions.
