Currier & Ives turned the ironclad *Merrimac* into a subject for its hand-colored lithograph of May 11, 1862, the day Confederate forces abandoned Norfolk and destroyed the ship rather than let Union troops capture her. The title places the blaze off Craney Island, near the mouth of the Elizabeth River. Confederates had rebuilt the former USS *Merrimac* as the CSS *Virginia*, and her 1862 battle with the Union ironclad *Monitor* at Hampton Roads had made her a national sensation. The print reflects a Northern audience's relief at seeing a ship that had briefly threatened the Union blockade go up in flames.
