Cod fishing off Newfoundland was a subject Currier & Ives returned to in several lithographs, and this 1872 print shows the North Atlantic fishery as a working scene of dories, lines, and hauls. The firm, based in New York, produced large numbers of inexpensive colored lithographs for a broad American public, many of them celebrating sea trades and national industries. Newfoundland's Grand Banks had drawn American fishing fleets for generations, and cod, salted and dried, was a staple of trade across the Atlantic. The print is catalogued as number 1303 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work.
