The title "A fishing smack" plays on two meanings of "smack": a small sailing fishing vessel and a loud kiss. The subjects listed for this stereograph, children, fishing, and kissing, suggest the pun is the point. New York publisher Strohmeyer & Wyman issued it around 1899, and it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. Stereograph cards like this were viewed through a hand stereoscope in parlors, where two slightly offset photographs merged into one three-dimensional scene. They remain a useful record of late nineteenth-century sentiment and humor.
