Few pairings in Renaissance history are as pointed as Cesare Borgia, the ruthless son of Pope Alexander VI, seated beside Niccolò Machiavelli. The two men crossed paths in 1502, when Machiavelli served as a Florentine envoy observing Cesare's campaigns in central Italy, and Machiavelli's later treatise *The Prince* drew heavily on what he saw of Cesare's methods. This photograph reproduces a painting by Federico Faruffini, an Italian artist who died young in 1869. Its copyright registration and date around 1898 show how widely photographic copies of well-known paintings circulated in that period.
