Janet Flanner and Solita Solano appear here with an unidentified man seated outdoors, a setting that distinguishes this print from other portraits of the two women. Flanner, who later wrote from Paris for *The New Yorker* under the pen name Genêt, and Solano, a writer, were building a life together abroad in the early 1920s. Crete had joined Greece only in 1913, so a visit there would have shown travelers an island still settling into its new national ties. The print survives among the Flanner-Solano papers at the Library of Congress, which document the couple's travels and working lives.
