A pencil note on the back of this plate reads "Schenck of Ohio," though the cataloging also lists a possible alternative identification, G.(?) Scheer. Sixth-plate daguerreotypes like this small format were a popular and affordable way to sit for a portrait in the 1840s and 1850s. The plate came from Mathew Brady's studio and passed to the U.S. War College in 1920 before joining the Library of Congress daguerreotype holdings.
