Hand-applied color warms the cheeks and clothing of this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, which shows an unidentified man and woman seated together and facing the camera. In the late 1840s, daguerreotypists often tinted the silvered plate with fine brushes and powdered pigments, an extra step that added warmth and cost to a portrait. The case carries the mark Rinhart 162 on its front, and the silk pad is stamped J. Turpin, details that help place the object's making. The Library of Congress received the plate as a 1999 gift from Anthony Barboza.
