Carson's inventory names the sitter as Dr. George W. Cardeza of Jefferson College, though the catalog title leaves him unidentified. The sixth-plate daguerreotype sits in a case with a flower design framed by ornament on the front and a geometric pattern on the back, and its Rinhart 44 hallmark supports a date between 1848 and 1860. Jefferson College was a small college in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and in these years daguerreotypes offered professionals and students an affordable, durable likeness.
