A small sixth-plate daguerreotype, the format that was common for portraits in the 1850s, shows an unidentified man with chin whiskers posed half-length and facing forward, his arm resting on a book. The image is ca. 1855 and sits on a silvered copper plate that gives it a mirror-like sheen, so it reads best when tilted under light. The brass mat is stamped "F. Grice," and the case is cataloged under Rinhart 257, both useful clues for dating and identifying the object. The book-and-arm pose was a familiar convention of the period, often suggesting learning or respectability.
