Here a man in Army uniform sits for the camera with his arms folded, and the record only tentatively names him as Thomas Lawson, a career Army officer who lived from about 1781 to 1861. The portrait is a quarter-plate daguerreotype, a mirror-bright silver image on copper that was made between 1845 and 1850, when the process was the leading form of photographic portraiture in America. Its scroll-patterned case, a gift to the Library of Congress in 1998, is part of the record. Because the sitter's identity is unconfirmed, the image is most useful as a document of how officers were posed and presented in this period.
