A half plate daguerreotype, toned with gold, shows a standing officer in uniform, posed three-quarter length and holding a sword. The record leaves the sitter unidentified, though it gives an alternative name, Col. Thomas Staniford, and a number scratched on the back of the plate, 382, hints at how such plates were filed. The plate came from Mathew Brady's studio, which made many portraits of military men in the decades before the Civil War, and it passed to the U.S. War College in 1920 before entering the Library of Congress. Gold toning deepened the image's tones and helped protect its surface.
