A young girl sits for the camera in this sixth plate daguerreotype, holding a doll in her lap, a pairing that gives the toy nearly as much presence as the child. Made between 1842 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the leading form of portrait photography, the small plate size was a common and affordable choice for family sitters. Exposures ran long enough that subjects had to hold still, so a child with a favorite toy could be steadied by the familiar object in her arms. The photographer is unknown, but the plate's hallmark and case style help place the image in the years when this format was most popular.
