Two girls sit side by side, three-quarter length and facing the camera, in this sixth-plate daguerreotype, whose color was brushed onto the silvered surface by hand after exposure. Makers in the 1840s and 1850s often added rouge to cheeks and gold to jewelry, a modest finish that made an inexpensive portrait look lifelike. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Frances Benjamin Johnston. Its photographer and sitters remain unidentified, but the plain leather case back with a central metal lozenge hints at the everyday trade in such keepsakes.
