Two unidentified children, a boy and a girl, sit side by side on an upholstered bench in this sixth plate daguerreotype, each holding a book. Families in the 1840s and 1850s often chose such props to suggest learning and respectability, and the long exposures of the process required sitters to hold still. The small format and metal case with leather insert made these portraits affordable enough to carry or keep close at hand, though the photographer is not recorded.
