Henry Clay sits three-quarters turned to the left, face toward the camera, a cane in hand and a tall hat resting on a draped table at his side. The Kentucky statesman was a leading Whig who ran for president in 1832, 1844, and 1848. This whole-plate daguerreotype, gold toned for richer tone, was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1852, when Brady was building his reputation by photographing prominent public figures. The sitter was identified later through an 1897 engraving in *McClure's* magazine, a reminder that identifications of early portraits often depend on later printed sources.
