Few daguerreotypes of the 1850s show a sitter this formally posed, with one hand resting on a draped table, and this sixth-plate portrait of Alexander Bell stands out for its hand coloring, which adds soft tints to the face and clothing over the silvered plate. The photographer is not recorded, and the plain leather case gives few clues beyond the portrait itself. The image is held in the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs at the Library of Congress, which links it to the family of Alexander Graham Bell. Daguerreotypes like this one are best viewed at an angle, since the image appears as a positive only when light reflects off the polished silver surface.
