Eunice Fiske Durfee is seated before a draped table with a large book resting on it, in this quarter-plate daguerreotype made between 1842 and 1853. The brass mat stamped with the name Cooley of Springfield suggests a small regional studio at work during the early years of photographic portraiture, when sitters had to hold still for long exposures. The picture later passed into the papers of the actress Minnie Maddern Fiske, wife of Eunice's grandson Harrison gray Fiske, which links this mid-century family likeness to a later theatrical household.
