Dolley Madison sat for this half-plate daguerreotype in 1848, the year before she died, when she was in her late seventies and had been out of the White House for more than three decades. She made her name there as a hostess during her husband James Madison's presidency. She is shown seated, three-quarter length and facing the camera, a formal pose typical of Mathew Brady's studio, which built its reputation in the 1840s with portraits of prominent Americans. The Library of Congress holds a later copy that was transferred from the U.S. War College in 1920.
