Captured in New York during the early weeks of the American tour that made Jenny Lind a sensation, this whole-plate daguerreotype shows the Swedish soprano seated and turned three-quarters to the left. Her tour, arranged by promoter P.T. Barnum, drew huge crowds and set off a craze known as "Lindomania." The identification rests on an 1850 lithograph made from a Mathew Brady daguerreotype, and the September 14 date comes from a later researcher, so it is best read as a well-supported attribution. The gold toning, applied to deepen the silver image, gives the plate its warm tones.
