Joannette Clark Benjamin, born in 1814 or 1815 and died in 1880, sits three-quarter length and faces the camera in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype. The image has been hand-colored, a practice in which an artist added pigment to the silvered plate to bring tone to the face and clothing that the process could not record. Daguerreotype portraits made between 1840 and 1860 were usually kept in protective cases and gave each sitter a single, unique likeness. The photographer is unidentified, but the portrait entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who collected early photographic work.
