In 1848, when she was nearly eighty, Dolley Madison sat for this half-plate daguerreotype at Mathew Brady's studio, and the portrait shows her three-quarters length, facing the camera. She had been the White House hostess during her husband James Madison's presidency from 1809 to 1817, and her receptions made her one of the best-known women in the capital. She died in July 1849, so this sitting came near the end of her life. Daguerreotypes have a mirror-bright silver surface, so the image shifts with the light and looks best viewed at a slight angle.
