This quarter-plate daguerreotype shows Mary Todd Lincoln seated, in a three-quarter-length view facing the camera, and it was made before her husband became a national figure. The record dates it to 1846 or 1847, when Abraham Lincoln was serving his single term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The photographer is possibly Nicholas H. Shepherd, and the plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Mary Lincoln Isham in 1937. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on silvered copper and are best viewed at an angle, where the image shifts from a positive to a faint mirror-like negative.
