Lincoln sits facing the camera in this three-quarter length daguerreotype, a quarter-plate image on silvered copper and one of the earlier portraits of him that survive. The record dates it to 1846 or 1847, and the attribution to the photographer Nicholas H. Shepherd rests on the recollections of Gibson W. Harris, a law student in Lincoln's office at the time. Lincoln's son Robert thought it was made in St. Louis or Washington during his father's single term in Congress, so the exact place remains uncertain.
