Seated with her elbow resting on a large book, this unidentified girl is posed three-quarters length and faces the camera squarely. The book was a common prop in mid-nineteenth-century studio portraits, where it suggested learning, refinement, or a family's regard for education. Her portrait is a half-plate daguerreotype, made on a polished silver-coated copper plate, and the photographer is unknown. The image dates from between 1840 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the dominant form of portrait photography in the United States.
