A seated girl, shown from the waist up and facing the camera, is the subject of this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, with the date 1847 scratched into the back of the plate. The sitter and the photographer are both unidentified. The tiny format and mirror-like surface are typical of the 1840s, when daguerreotypes were the most common portrait process. The record suggests she may be holding a small case, a detail marked with a question mark. A loose note tucked behind the plate refers to union cases patented in 1856 and 1857, so it was written later than the portrait and does not confirm its date.
