Though the sitter remains unidentified, the pose is revealing: a man seated beside a draped table, one hand resting on a book, shown in three-quarter length. The plate has been hand-colored, a practice popular in the 1840s and 1850s, when tints were added to cheeks, lips, and clothing to soften the silvery tones of the original image. The hallmark and case variant link the piece to a cataloged group of mid-century casings, and the book and tablecloth reflect the studied respectability that sitters of this era often sought.
