John McAllister, whose record gives his life span as 1786 to 1877, sits here at about sixty-six, three-quarter length and facing the camera with one arm resting on a draped table. That settled pose suited early 1850s studio portraits, when sitters had to hold still through long exposures. This example is a stereoscopic daguerreotype, made with a twin-lens camera so that two slightly offset views could be seen as one three-dimensional image in a viewer. Each daguerreotype is a unique positive on silvered copper, so this plate exists only as this single object.
