The sitter in this sixth-plate daguerreotype wears spectacles, and his arm rests on a draped tablecloth, a pose that suggests a formal studio sitting. The photographer and the sitter are both unidentified, but the stamped Rinhart hallmark on the plate gives a small clue to where the image was made. Daguerreotypes of the 1840s and 1850s were made on silver-coated copper plates that were polished to a mirror finish, so the picture appears only at certain angles and shifts with the light. Portraits like this one, made in the years between 1840 and 1860, were often kept in cases and carried as keepsakes.
