A half-length portrait of an unidentified boy, seated with one arm resting on a draped table, sets this sixth-plate daguerreotype apart from the many child portraits made in the 1840s. The image dates to about 1848, when the daguerreotype was the leading photographic process and sitters often paid for small, sealed cases like this one. The silk pad inside is stamped "J. Turpin," and a partial hallmark shows an eagle holding an olive branch, details that help historians trace how cases were made and sold.
