A hand-colored quarter-plate daguerreotype, this portrait shows an unidentified woman seated at three-quarter length, her left arm resting on a draped table beside a book. The color was applied by hand over the silvered plate, a practice that gave mid-1850s portraits warmth that bare plates lacked. The sitter is unnamed, but the object offers clues: the brass mat is stamped "F. Grice," and the case is a Rinhart, both typical of the careful packaging used for these small cased portraits. The Library of Congress holds it.
