Seated beside a small table draped in a cloth, with a tall hat resting on it, the man in this half-plate daguerreotype is James Gordon Bennett, the Scottish-born founder of the *New York Herald*. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1851 and 1852, the plate was gold-toned to deepen its tones and sharpen detail. An engraving of the likeness by Jourdan appeared in the *United States Democratic Review* in late 1852, which helps confirm the sitter's identity. Bennett had built the *Herald* into one of the most widely read papers in the country, so his portrait would have been of considerable public interest.
