Taliaferro Preston Shaffner stands full length in this daguerreotype, turned three-quarters to the right with a tall hat in hand, a chair at one side and a draped table at the other. Shaffner later became known as a telegraph pioneer and the author of *Shaffner's Telegraph Manual*, and an engraving made from this portrait for that book is what identifies him. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when gold toning gave daguerreotypes a warm sheen, the plate shows the formal posing typical of studio portraits of the period.
